About Kat, aka "ArtyKat"

I'm an artist, photographer, teacher, writer, art doll maker, and retired therapist (among other things). I love words - written, sung, read, quoted, printed... and pictures, whether photos, paintings, drawings... and color. LOTS of color! Except for when I'm drawing Zentangle® Art! My primary site is HeartsUntangled.com

Only a week

Standard
Only a week

Only in a week until I teach my first public workshop! I’m really excited to do it and I feel much more confident this week than I did last week so that’s good progress.

I’ve come to realize that I no longer feel like I’m pretending to be an artist–I know I really am one now. That is huge for me! It’s kind of like when a person is in their 30s and older not feeling like they are a real adult. It is a matter of feeling it internally, NOT a true representation of what others think of the person.

I am an Artist and a Photographer and I don’t care what anyone thinks about it. I am an artist and I’m not afraid to say so.

I’ve struggled with feeling qualified or feeling I’m only pretending all of my life. I also have had difficulty in allowing myself to do things I really enjoy. I would say, in my head, “I think today would be good to paint [i love watercolor painting] so I need to do the dishes first.” After the dishes…”I need to write the 4 people to whom I owe letters or vacuum the floor or alphabetized my books and CDs…” or whatever crazy tasks I come up with before I can paint. You know the end of the story, right?  I never get around to allowing myself to paint.

Now that’s just nuts!

But I am glad to say that I am not doing it any longer! If I want to draw, I draw–and I do want to…every day! In fact, my days feel incomplete if I haven’t tangled.

The name of my art practice is called HeART Tangles Studios, and here’s why: drawing using the Zentangle® Method takes the tangly mess of thoughts in my head, and more importantly, the tangled mess of emotions, feelings and thoughts, and memories in my heart. Drawing untangles my heart tangles!

Here is some recent art for your enjoyment and maybe for your inspiration! (Click to make larger if wanted)

three new-to-me tangles I learned at the CZT Seminar

this was drawn on a blank greeting card for a teenager whom I’ve sponsored in Bolivia for many years. he loves art.

this was in the Free Press and has been sent tio many newspapers and TV/radio stations in our large region

Keep this creative juices flowing! And do leave a comment to let me know you stopped by!

Well, once again I am playing catch up! Since I was last here, I’ve been keeping quite busy drawing tangles daily! I am also scheduled to teach Basic Zentangle Art 101 at our local art center on July 25th! Very nervous but it will be ok after the first 15 minutes, I’m sure.

I have taught a private class to my adult daughter and husband, and here is a mosaic of their work (mine is on the left). I must’ve done something right because their tiles are Beautiful!
My first class ever!

I have also been dabbling at larger non-stenciled works – just free-flow tangling.

Here are two examples:

A few more pieces I’ve completed…A Stacked Tile

This was a lot of fun!

What do you see?

I would love to read what these look like to you, or what they remind you of… Which is your favorite?

Comments make my day!

So much to catch up on

So much to catch up on

and no time tonight in which to do it! I attended the CZT Training in Providence Rhode Island and would go back in a heartbeat. It was absolutely magnificent and met the needs I had and many I didn’t even realize I had!

I have been tangling like mad since returning, and today I made the front of a 5×7 notecard. This was the largest I’ve done without a stencil or outline yet. Here it is…

I sent a few photos with it as my friend, the recipient, has no computer and has no idea what Zentangle is.
Speaking of Zentangle, I am holding a workshop BASIC ZENTANGLE 101 here on July 25th at the Art Center. Yay

Take care, and create some art today,

Kat

Diva Challenge #222

Diva Challenge #222

“Colours of the Rainbow” is this week’s I Am The Diva Challenge , and I couldn’t be happier! I love color. No, you don’t understand- I looooooove color! I love it so much that I started an Instagram hub (group) called @jj_colorful… Do visit. (Also one for Zentangle @heart.tangles )

So, without further delay, here is my entry- it is a bookmark (my first ever) that I made for my very dear friend of 31 years (can that be right?!?!? Yep it is!) in Illinois who always gets my “firsts.” It was her idea that I Google “Zentangle” as I was frustrated and stuck in my creativity – or lack thereof. By far the best Google search of my life!

She even received and even framed my first attempt, which wasn’t an official Zentangle® tile but something entirely different. I forgot to take a photo of it but she sent me one:

Not very Zentangly but I gave it a serious try! And this pitcher was an accident! I simply closed my eyes and made one line. I close the line and started… And in a short time after turning it all ’round to tangle it, the pitcher emerged. It was quite apropos and a good symbol for our friendship.

So, without any further ado, here is my bookmark:

I’m sorry if it is too big! I can’t figure out how to make it smaller.

I thought I’d better get this completed and posted today since I leave early Saturday morning for RHODE ISLAND! I’ll be attending and hopefully graduating the CZT20. That’s Certified Zentangle Teacher training number 20. It is a 12 hour drive and complicated due to my disabilities and medical conditions but my friend of 5 years here in Appalachia will act as my assistant. I’m so excited I can’t even sleep more than 5-6 hours a night!

Happy Tangling,

Kat

My First Diva Challenge!

Standard

I am so excited because my trip to Rhode Island to attend the 20th CZT session is less than 2 weeks away! When it’s over, all being well, I will be a Certified Zentangle Teacher. I’m a retired grief and trauma resolution therapist and have lots of ideas brewing about merging the two (therapeutic drawing).

I recently discovered an Instagram page @iamthediva and subsequently found out about her challenges. Go to I Am The Diva website to see what I mean. This week is #221 Beads of Courage, and my Zentangle tile has three patterns that contain “beads.

Do go to the site and find #221 and read it all the way through.

One of my “bead” patterns is one I created but I’m sure it already exists. It is called Beanz because the core looks like a coffee bean within a bead, with a black small bead between them on a strand. It’s at the bottom of this photo.
Hope I did this right!

Take care,

Kat

PS I made a second tile, and it is the next post. Please visit and see it! It is for http://iamthedivaczt.blogspot.com challenge.

I’ve been Tangling like mad!

one thing I like to do is to encourage my refers and followers on other social mediums (such as Instagram) to let their imaginations free to see and feel things while looking at my art. For example, it might evoke the ocean and seashells, sand, seagulls, and waves when you see my abstract tile. I’ve seeing my own art through others’ eyes. Take a look at these… What do YOU see?

Hope you will tell me your thoughts soon!

Live a colorful life,

TOTD- Tangles of the Day

Standard

I am so eager to go to my CZT training in June. It is held in Providence, Rhode Island and I’ve never been there. My husband has never seen the East Coast so it should be an  adventure!

Because of preparing to teach others, I am focusing on 3.5″x3.5″ tiles for now. Here are some…
